A narrative-driven inspiration system to reward bold choices, creativity, and cinematic moments.
What Is Heroic Resolve?
Heroic Resolve represents a surge of inner strength drawn from moments of personal triumph, sacrifice, or inspiration. These points are awarded by the DM when a player:
- Delivers a truly impactful roleplay moment
- Succeeds against the odds with clever or thematic play
- Makes a sacrifice or choice that elevates the scene or story
Heroic Resolve Dice
Players receive special dice that scale with their level:
| Character Level | Heroic Resolve Dice |
|---|---|
| 1–4 | 1d4 |
| 5–8 | 1d6 |
| 9–12 | 1d8 |
| 13–16 | 1d10 |
| 17–20 | 1d12 |
- Players may hold up to 5 Heroic Resolve dice at once.
- These are not normal inspiration and do not expire until used.
Using Heroic Resolve Dice
You can roll one Heroic Resolve die to add it to any of the following:
- Ability checks
- Saving throws
- Attack rolls
- Damage rolls
- Healing rolls
Note: These dice cannot be used on death saving throws (see Death & Resurrection).
Only one Heroic Resolve die may be used per roll.
Overflow Consequences
If the DM attempts to award a sixth Heroic Resolve die and the player already has five, something else may occur instead:
- The DM may trigger a narrative consequence, minor mishap, or chaotic twist of fate.
- This is a soft push to encourage spending Heroic Resolve rather than hoarding it.
- Examples include:
- A misfire in an overconfident moment
- Magical feedback
- A fumbled opportunity that would’ve gone differently if resolve had been used
These are situational, flavourful, and never intended to punish — only to nudge narrative momentum.
