The Meibion Cewri - The So Called Children of Giants

General Informations

Giants, as most folk call them, are rare and strange beings of incredible size and strength. Across Eldoria and beyond, they are more often the subject of fireside tales than factual accounts. Among scholars, a name has surfaced: Meibion Cewri, a term that means “Children of Giants” in Elvish. Some scholars and travellers also refer to them as Skarn-giants, a name that has gained traction in more recent years, though its origin is debated, and the Dwarves are rumoured to have another name for them.

Giants, or those who are called giants today, are found in the most remote parts of the world. Deep within ancient forests, beneath the ground in massive cavern halls, among shattered peaks where no road leads. Rumours even speak of giants who stride across the ocean floor, or who walk unseen within the clouds. Scattered remnants of their culture appear as ruins across the world. Many of these sites are hidden in places most mortals dare not tread. Great stone doors, toppled spires carved with runes no one speaks, and stairways too wide and shallow for human legs. Most who enter such places return shaken, if they return at all. There are murmurs that these ruins pre-date the dwarves themselves. Some say they were built not with tools, but with will alone. And if that is true, then how old must the Meibion Cewri be? And what were they, truly, before they became what they are now?

Rumours and Legends

Most common folk are unfamiliar with the name, or at best have heard it used in rumour. Here are some of the more popular beliefs about the Meibion Cewri.

  • The Meibion Cewri are simply what giants call themselves. A term of pride and heritage.
  • They are not true giants, but the degenerate offspring of ancient titans, cursed to walk the world half-formed.
  • The name was given to them by dwarves, not out of reverence, but mockery.
  • They do not speak their own name aloud. To name themselves is to awaken ancestral memory.
  • The name comes from an old elven dialect and refers to a forgotten pact between mortals and mountain spirits.
  • The Meibion Cewri are said to be the last wardens of a time before time, guarding doors none can now see.
  • The Meibion Cewri cannot die of age, only of grief or violence.
  • They are remnants of the world’s dreams, abandoned when the gods awoke.
  • Each one carries a rune carved into their heart, passed down from the first giant.
  • Their tears are said to turn to gemstones when spilled on sacred ground.
  • They once built a stairway to the stars, and the broken pieces now lie scattered across the world.
  • Some Meibion Cewri can no longer speak, for their voices break the minds of those who hear them.
