Umbriel

Discord Pantheon - Major God of Shadows, Decay, Corruption

Overview

Umbriel is the shadow that clings after death, the rot that consumes the body and the lie that festers in the soul. He does not guide spirits to rest as Erebos does but ensnares them, twisting memory and legacy into corruption. His presence is found in places where light dies, where whispers replace truth, and where rot turns harvest into ash. To follow Umbriel is to embrace secrecy and slow ruin, the belief that all things must wither so that corruption may rule.

Domains

Shadows, Decay, Corruption

Symbol

A withered hand clutching a black veil, often painted in ash or carved into decayed wood. In some cults the veil is sewn from burial shrouds.

Eldorian Name

Umbriel (TBD)

Worship

Favoured Offerings

Rotting fruit, mould-ridden bread, blood poured into stagnant water, or personal secrets confessed in absolute darkness.

Typical Followers

Spies, assassins, poisoners, necromancers, and nobles who cloak their corruption in fine words. Thieves’ guilds sometimes pay him homage, believing Umbriel veils their deeds from law and divine sight alike. Cults of Umbriel thrive in plague-stricken cities, where fear of decay gives way to worship of the one who governs it.

Temples & Orders

Hidden catacombs filled with mould and dripping water, underground shrines sealed in airless chambers, and corrupted groves where diseased trees still stand. Some orders of Umbriel mask themselves in rotting veils and require oaths of secrecy under pain of slow poisoning.

Lore

Umbriel is the eternal rival of Erebos, whose ferryman role grants rest and peace. Where Erebos guides, Umbriel clutches. Myths tell that when the first mortals died, Erebos carried their souls across the veil, but Umbriel lingered behind to consume what was left. Stories claim that Umbriel can twist the shadow of a traitor so it rises again as a servant, bound forever in rot. In darker tales, he is the one who first taught mortals the craft of poison.

Common Knowledge in Eldoria

“Umbriel walks where the fruit spoils.” Farmers use this phrase when rot spreads through grain. In cities, to say “the veil has slipped” is to mean corruption has been exposed. It is believed that moths fluttering in closed rooms are Umbriel’s spies, and many Eldorians burn incense at night to drive them away. Grave-robbers whisper prayers to him before their thefts, hoping his shadow will hide them from the wrath of Erebos.
