TL;DR: attunement slots = FLOOR(LVL/2)
Some magic items require attunement to function. This process binds the item’s magical properties to the user, granting full access to its effects.
Attuning to an Item
- Attunement requires a short rest spent focused solely on the item.
- The item must be on your person and actively handled or studied.
- You can end attunement to an item during a short rest, unless the item is cursed or otherwise stated conditions that prevent it.
Slot Limit
- You may attune to a number of magic items equal to half your total character level (rounded down).
- Example: A level 7 character may attune to 3 items.
- This replaces the default rule of 3 attunement slots for all characters.
Attunement Restrictions
- You can only attune to an item if you meet all prerequisites (e.g. class, race, alignment).
- Each item may only be attuned to one creature at a time.
Advanced Slot Usage
Some powerful or complex magic items may require more than one attunement slot.
- These items usually grant significant benefits, scale with the character, or contain multiple magical functions.
- The number of slots required will be stated in the item’s description.
- Example: A legendary artefact may require 3 or even all of a character’s slots.
Cursed Items
Cursed items may automatically attune upon use or contact. These cannot be unattuned by resting unless the curse is first broken (see Remove Curse).
