This system allows characters to exceed the traditional ability score cap—at a cost.

Raising a Score Above 20

Traditionally, an ability score cannot exceed 20 through standard level-up increases. Under this rule:

  • Players can increase their ability scores beyond 20 when given the opportunity (e.g. ASIs at levels 4, 8, 12, 16, 19).
  • You may also exceed 20 through story-driven enhancements, divine boons, or class feature rewards.

Example: A character with Strength 19 can raise it to 21 by using a +2 ASI, instead of being capped at 20.

How It Applies

This applies to all sources of ability score increases:

  • Level-up ASIs
  • Magic items
  • Player arc rewards
  • Divine gifts

Characters may raise scores beyond 20 by any means granted in-game, but the DM may introduce roleplay, cost, or consequences for exceptionally high stats.
